Is progress necessary beneficial to for the society?

When i first read this question, i answered, "Of course!" But on the second thought, i was in a dilemma. Why must the progress of the society be necessary beneficial to for the society? Now, as the society, progress at an amazing speed, industrialization becomes more common then ever, spreading to the villages as well. Is industrialization good? While you ponder on that question, let me help you decide. Although industrialization largely increase the jobs available and a boon to the society, it is definitely damaging our home, the Earth. Industrialization had resulted in thousand of acres of land useless, mainly by pollution; the villagers were also forced to adapt the to the modern way of living all of a sudden-which may not be beneficial to them.
