Take this kiss upon the brow! And, in parting from you now, Thus much let me avow-- You are not wrong, who deem That my days have been a dream; Yet if hope has flown away In a night, or in a day, In a vision, or in none, Is it therefore the less gone? All that we see or seem Is but a dream within a dream. I stand amid the roar Of a surf-tormented shore, And I hold within my hand Grains of the golden sand-- How few! yet how they creep Through my fingers to the deep, While I weep--while I weep! O God! can I not grasp Them with a tighter clasp? O God! can I not save One from the pitiless wave? Is all that we see or seem But a dream within a dream? Metaphor That my days have been a dream-the writer is telling us how her days is similar to a dream Personification The sand creeps-the writer could not hold back or save the sand no matter how hard he tried Yet if hope has flown away-give a vivid description of hope Pitiless waves-describe how the waves crashes onto the beach and brings the sands away Hyperbole Of a surf-tormented shore -the writer wants to emphasize the waves I like this poem because it is describing the natural the natural scenery of the beach in a vivid manner, personifying many elements on the beach, for example, "pitiless waves" ,"the sand creeps". Also every sentence rhythms smoothly adding to its flow of fluency the last sentence also give a dramatic impact on the readers by emphasizing "Oh God". The last sentences also gave a good closure by reminding the readers of the poem's title,a dream within a dream. The poem also tells us that some things cannot be stopped or saved from harm on matter how hard we tries.
